KABK 60 Years

Industrial Design at the KABK celebrates 60th anniversary!
Legends inspire new icons, since 1951

Legendary work by among others Frans de La Haye and Gerrit Rietveld and by new design talent is shown at the exhibition ‘Legends inspire new icons’ by the Post Graduate Course Industrial Design at the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague. The first course for industrial Design in the Netherlands celebrates her 60th anniversary with an exhibition in the gallery of the KABK from 4 until 24 November 2011.

The exhibition the Post Graduate Course Industrial Design not only shows present and past of the course itself, but also that of industrial design in The Netherlands in general. Important designers like Friso Kramer, Wim Rietveld and Kho Liang Ie were involved with the Post Graduate Course Industrial Design either as a teacher or student. The course also expresses her vision on design seen in the objects by new design talent. Studio Barbara Vos shows her Bête Tête’s, a first prize winning stuffed animal and her translucent ceramic wall tiles, Tex-tiles.

Highlights of the exhibition are design classics like cabinet 663 by Wim Rietveld together with Bookcase Kwan by Studio Ditte. The moving tea table nr 555 by W.H. Gispen next to sculptural aluminium Garden table by Bouke Wilens. In short, ‘legends inspire new icons’ is a design exhibition in which classics and innovators, design and vision inspire and strengthen each other. Concept and exhibition design are developed by the current students of the Post Graduate Course Industrial Design.

Development of the design field

The exhibition not only gives an overview of legendary work by (former) students and teachers of the past 60 years Post Graduate Course Industrial Design. It also shows how the course developed over the last sixty years and how it is currently organised. The course started a connection between industry and technique at the one side and the design field at the other side. This contemporary vision forms the foundation of the course programme. The combination of technique and design was and is still a unique feature of the course. Our three years course is still the only one available in The Netherlands for our specific target group: graduated bachelors with a technical education or art education who wish to broaden their development.

The exhibition is opened from Monday to Friday from 9.00-17.00 hr and on Saturdays from 10.00-16.00 hr in the gallery of the Academy at the Prinsessegracht 4 in The Hague.
